A Dozen Great Events Featured This Weekend in the Region

The Summer of 2021 rolls on this week and all of us at the Oldfather Group hope you're having an enjoyable season so far at the Delaware and Maryland beaches, or wherever you happen to call home.

We have a number of fun things to tell you about in locations all around the region, highlighted by some great events happening in the Wilmington, Dover and Annapolis areas, as well as at the beaches.

This weekend's schedule is quite full and we have a lot to feature, so we're going to forego the usual banter and get straight into our featured events for the weekend of June 11-13.

Here are some of our favorites for the upcoming weekend...

48th Annual Members’ Fine Craft Exhibition (June 11)

Join the good folks at the Rehoboth Art League over the next few days as they present their 48th Annual Members' Fine Craft Exhibition at their Henlopen Acres campus.

A wide variety of artwork will be featured in 2021 in areas that include, ceramics, glass, jewelry, metal, wood, leather and many more.

This year's exhibition actually runs through July 18, but the event kicks off this Friday, June 11.

Sand Duels Beach Soccer Challenge (June 12-13)

Want to watch some competitive soccer this weekend? Then Ocean City is the place to be on Saturday, June 12, and Sunday, June 13.

It's time for the 27th Annual Sand Duels Beach Soccer Tournament, which features five-on-five soccer matches played on the beach. It's the largest sand soccer event each year in Ocean City.

The tournament will be held on the sand between Wicomico and North Division Streets, beginning Saturday at 8 a.m., with the younger age groups. Older age groups will play on Sunday.

Movies on the Beach (June 12-14)

It's that time of the year where the popular Movies on the Beach are returning for another great summer season at the Delaware and Maryland beaches.

These are held throughout the summer in Bethany Beach, Dewey Beach and Ocean City, as well as Lefty's drive-in theater in Lewes. Movies in Dewey Beach don't begin for a couple more weeks, but other ones are kicking off now.

Held every Monday night during the season in Dewey and Bethany, family friendly movies hosted by these two resort towns are fun for everyone. Bring your family, a blanket and some popcorn to the beach for family movie night!

Movies start at approximately 8:30 p.m. on the beach at Dagsworthy Street in Dewey Beach (first showing is scheduled for June 28) and Garfield Parkway in Bethany Beach. This week’s selection in Bethany Beach, on Monday, June 14, is “Playmobil: The Movie."

Ocean City will also be hosting movie nights for 2021 on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings on the beach at both 27th Street and 118th Street. Call 410-250-0125 for more information.

St. Anthony's Italian Festival (June 8-11)

This year's big Italian Festival in Wilmington has been scaled down due to the coronavirus pandemic and will be a takeout only event for 2021.

But if you love great Italian food, you're still in luck! Online ordering is available for the four days of the festival by clicking here.

After you've placed your order in advance, you can pick it up at the site of the festival, which will again be at St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church in downtown Wilmington.

On-site ordering is available in the parking lot across West 9th Street from St. Anthony's Grade School. Some of the region's best Italian food will be available for takeout from Tuesday, June 8, through Friday, June 11, between 4:30 and 7:30 p.m.

Ladybug Garden Crawl (June 11)

The Mt. Cuba Center in Hockessin will be hosting a special Ladybug Garden Crawl event this Friday, June 11, from 5:30 until 8:30 p.m.

Featured events and activities include some great live music, food, drinks and good family fun for all ages. Scheduled performers include Hotsy Totsy, the Olivia Rubini Trio, Julia Johnson and several others.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $8 for children between the ages of 6 and 17. Kids 5 and under are admitted for free.

Victorian Picnic on the Green (June 12)

Who doesn't love a picnic in the summertime? And The Green in Dover is a great place to spread a blanket and enjoy some good food in the great outdoors.

Scheduled for this Saturday, June 12, from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., in downtown Dover, this event is open to all members of the public and promises a fun few hours on a June Saturday.

A nine-piece brass band will be on hand adding to the festive nature of the event, along with opportunities to play some popular Victorian lawn games and enjoy a nice outdoor meal.

Tickets are $20 and include your meal, prepared by La Baguette, with four different options available to satisfy everyone's cravings. You can bring your own beverage or purchase one on site if you prefer. Ice cream will also be available for purchase.

Hot Jam Local Music Festival (June 13)

The Center for the Creative Arts in Yorklyn will be hosting its Hot Jam Local Music Festival this Sunday, June 13, beginning at 1 p.m.

Tickets cost $5 at the door and are free for children under the age of 12. All proceeds go to benefit the Center for the Creative Arts.

Scheduled performers for 2021 include Less Than Five, Billy Frolic, Russell Que, Sharks with Laser Beams and Thomas & Branden, among others.

Advance tickets are not available and tickets can only be purchased on-site the day of the show.

West Street Art Festival (June 13)

The West Street Art Festival will be held this Sunday, June 13, along the Wilmington Riverfront.

Highlights of this year's festival, which is scheduled from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., will be a bike ride in partnership with the Urban Bike Project, a community mural designed by artist 7GOD and improv activities with First State Improv, among many others.

This is a free event and will also feature vendors, performers, food trucks and plenty of outdoor arts-based activities.

4th Annual Annapolis Arts Week (June 6-12)

This week-long celebration of the arts in Maryland's capital city features something for everyone, with a number of special events and performances planned between June 6-12.

Just a few of the featured events include a performance by the United Jazz Ensemble, an open studio for teenagers at ArtFarm, a "Dinner Under the Stars" event on West Street, a beginner's improv class, a performance by The Tambo Band and much, much more.

This weeklong event began on Sunday, June 6, and runs through Saturday, June 11.

Antique Airplane Fly-In at Massey Aerodrome (June 12)

If you enjoy antique airplanes, then the Massey Aerodrome in Massey, Maryland is where you're going to want to be this Saturday, June 11.

This 45th antique aeroplane fly-in is conducted by the Potomac Antique Aero Squadron and is hosted for the first time in Massey.

The event runs from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m., with judging occurring until 2 p.m.

There is no admission fee to this event, but donations are accepted and appreciated and will be used to keep the antique fly-in going in future years.

Lavender Festival (June 12)

Smokey Cat Lavender Farm in Federalsburg will be hosting a special Lavender Festival this Saturday, June 12, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Located on Long Swamp Road, admission is $12, with children under 10 admitted for free. This also includes a "U-Pick Bunch" and a great day of fun spread out among the lavender fields.

Grab a treat from the Vanderwende Creamery ice cream truck, pet some alpacas from Outstanding Dreams Alpacas, make a flower crown and enjoy some great live music while visiting the farm.

This event is scheduled for 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., on Saturday, June 12.

Canal Town Brewfest (June 12)

We wrap things up this week by telling you about the 2021 Canal Town Brewfest, scheduled for this Saturday, June 12, in Chesapeake City.

Several of the areas best breweries will be on-site for the enjoyment of festival goers. The event is held this year at the Chesapeake City Volunteer Fire Company, located at 215 Lock Street.

General admission tickets are $30 if purchased in advance ($40 the day of the event), which includes a souvenir five ounce tasting glass and unlimited samples between the hours of 2 and 6 p.m. VIP tickets are $45 and include early access to the event, unlimited samples and a food voucher ticket.

Designated driver tickets are available for $15.

Food vendors will also be on-site, along with a number of local bands belting out some great tunes.
